What is Dutching?
Dutching spreads your stake across multiple selections proportionally, so you win the same amount regardless of which selection wins.
Quick Reference: Odds Formats
Decimal
Total return per unit staked, including your stake. 2.50 returns $2.50 on a $1 bet.
Fractional
Profit relative to stake. 3/2 means $3 profit for every $2 staked, plus your stake back.
American
Positive shows profit on a $100 stake; negative shows the stake needed to win $100.

What is Dutching?

Dutching is a strategy of backing multiple selections in the same event, with stakes calculated to produce the same profit regardless of which selection wins. It is named after Dutch Schultz, a 1930s New York gangster who allegedly used the technique at racetracks.

How It Works

The calculator divides your total stake proportionally based on the odds of each selection. Lower-odds selections receive a larger share of the stake, higher-odds selections receive less. The result is an equal profit from any winner.

The Formula

For each selection: Individual Stake = Total Stake × (1/Odds) / Sum of (1/Odds for all selections)

Example

You want to Dutch 3 horses in a race with a $100 total stake:

  • Horse A: 3.00 → Stake = $100 × (1/3) / (1/3 + 1/5 + 1/8) = $43.48
  • Horse B: 5.00 → Stake = $26.09
  • Horse C: 8.00 → Stake = $16.30

Profit if any of the 3 wins = approximately $30.43

When Dutching Works

Dutching is profitable when the combined implied probability of your selections is less than 100%. If the total overround of your selected outcomes is under 100%, you have value regardless of which one wins.

Dutching vs Each-Way

In horse racing, Dutching multiple runners to win can sometimes offer better value than an each-way bet on a single selection, especially when the each-way terms are unfavourable (1/5 odds vs 1/4).
